During Jack Hanlon's studies for the priesthood at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, he pursued his interest in art by visiting art galleries and churches in Belgium, France and Spain. He was influenced by Cubism, but he developed a persona, less formulaic style - not dissimilar to Lhôte (q.v.) - with an emphasis on light and colour, as is evident in this work.
