This work is on long-term loan from the Cairnes Trust, Drogheda.
The sitter, Thomas Plunkett Cairnes of Stameen House, Drogheda and of the Castlebellingham and Drogheda Breweries, founded, amongst other philanthrophic bodies, the Cairnes Trust which built a number of of houses for 'the working classes' in various districts of Drogheda in the 19th Century, as well as building a wing to the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin. Thomas Plunkett Cairnes moved into Stameen House in the late 1860's and a formed a public company, the Castlebellingham & Drogheda Breweries, became a director of the Loop Line Railway Company, a governor of the Bank of Ireland. Thomas P. Cairnes died in 1893.
