The sitter, Richard Irvine Best, Litt D (born 1872 - died 1959) was Assistant Librarian at the National Library of Ireland from 1904, assuming the Directorship there in 1924 which he held until 1949. He held the office of Senior Professor of Celtic Studies at the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies from 1940 until 1947.

His last will and testament directed that his executors divide his pictures among the galleries of Ireland, resulting in Drogheda obtaining fourteen works from his collection. His bequest was the largest single donation to this institution and the range of works obtained significantly deepen the survey of art contained at Highlanes.
