Richard Caulfeild Orpen, architect and watercolorourist, was born in Blackrock, Co. Dublin and was the eldest brother of Sir William Orpen. He lived in Carrickmines, Co. Dublin and was educated at St. Columba's College, Rathfarnham, where he subsequently taught as art master. He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) and at the Water Colour Society of Ireland (WCSI). He was elected to the RHA in 1912.

R C Orpen became Governor and Guardian of the National Gallery of Ireland and Visitor to the RHA School, as well as being founder of the Architectural Association.
