Mervyn Peake was born in China. He trained at the Croyden School of Art and at the Royal Academy School (RA) in London. He taught life-drawing at the Westminster School of Art. He worked in pencil, gouache, oil and words (as a poet). He illustrated many books. He died in England in 1968.
