Much of the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection (DMAC) which is managed by the
Highlanes Gallery, has been developed by generous gifts of
significant works of art obtained by legacy following the death of a collector,
or has been given by the person's family in their memory.
As a collecting institution, the Gallery wishes to obtain works which
will strengthen and develop the public's understanding of the survey of art
contained within the DMAC. Priorities will change over the years, but an assessment
of the collection will show gaps in the DMAC where certain artists or periods
are not currently represented. In other cases, it might be useful to widen the
collection of an artist which has significant ties to the region or events or
images associated with the area.
The Gallery strongly encourages anyone wishing to gift a work of art, to
contact the Director (in confidence) before making a decision. The Gallery is
presently developing an acquisitions policy which will set out how it receives
work, including by legacy. This is to ensure that that the collection remains
of a high standard and offers a deeper insight into the work of a particular
artist, school or period.
The board of the Gallery will make a recommendation to Drogheda Borough
Council on whether or not to accept a gift. As this is naturally a sensitive
area for individuals and families, the Gallery works with donors in making a
mutual assessment of the potential gift in the strictest of confidence, on a
'without prejudice' basis.
In addition, a legacy of cash will assist in supporting
acquisitions, education, conservation, and research and unless provided for by
the donor, will not be used to defray day-to-day administration costs. All such
gifts are acknowledged and the donor's name is attached to any work given, if
that is their request and a Legacy Memorial Book is retained in which the names
of all donors is entered.
The
Gallery is in the process of preparing a briefing paper on legacies which will
be circulated to solictors and accountants in the region to assist them in
advising their clients and taking their instructions.
